Engineering Organization

Honeywell started to have an investigation mission to dig into the newly acquired engineering forces. Among the reviewers were RF.Anderson assigned as NPL Program overseer, W.PODUSKA and mainly Ugo GAGLIARDI from Harvard Computer Lab who was assigned as the Technical Director of the Project. Ugo was given a small team of consultants as the NPL Technical Office in Billerica. Giuliano RAVIOLA moved from Pregnana as a General secretary of the project.

As it might be observed, the Italian component was subject to temptations of independence because its assignment to the lower end, and the origin of the key people of the NPL Technical Office was then seen as a way to control this temptation.

Jacques BOUVARD was assigned to this committee from the now disbanded minicomputer operation. His knowledge of French language may also have contributed to his selection.

Irma WYMAN represented the relationship with the old Honeywell establishment and particularly its Marketing Arm. Doris BENCZYK was specially in charge of manufacturing.

In addition, some bright computer scientists, as Jeff BUZEN, known in the area of performances simulation, and Robert GOLDBERG, in the area of Operating systems , joined the Technical Office.

Jacques BOUVARD and Charlie BACHMAN made a lot of work to provide a formal description of operating systems functions using Charlie's data structure diagrams methodology. Difficulties to use it came from the fact that the methodology was not fully assessed for procedural objects and from the differences in "philosophy" between Jacques' view of an event-driven operating system and what was being designed in development houses.
