4 août 1972 : Heads for Subagreement X0.
In the scope of a general agreement between CII, Philips and Siemens the following is confirmed :
1. Philips will be responsible for the development and supply of the X0 (instead of BL) defined as follows :
2. X0 will be upward compatible with X1, and thereby with X-line.
3. Since it is assumed that at the level of X0 and
X1 the performance ratio of 1 to 2 suits the market requirement on a competitive
level, the following should apply to X0 and X1 :
Performance of X0 roughly 40 K op/s (X1 being roughly 80 K op/s ).
That corresponds to a performance of 2.5 for X0 and 5 for X1 if 360-50
performance is taken as 10.In the market as seen to day, X1 will compete with
370-125 and X0 will compete with 370-115 as expected.The planned price-range
will be approximately $2500 - $5000/month, with optimal configuration around
$3500/ month, whereas X1 optimal configuration will be about $6000/month. These
figures will be reviewed jointly. The purpose of the above price-performance
figures for X0 in relation to X1 is to define a proper distance between X0 and
Xl meeting both market requirements and individual company interests.Detailing
of these specifications of X0 in relation to X1 will be made as soon as
possible.
4. Device interfaces of the X will be the same as those of the X-line.
5. The X-line peripheral catalogue shall be extended with appropriate low cost peripherals for X0.
6. The operating systems of the X0 will be able to
run on the X1, taking into account the memory size requirements.
Siemens is ready to provide PBS and later on the BSR as operating systems to be
adapted by Philips according to the size of the systems. These resultant
operating systems will be available for other X-models.
7. Philips is striving for delivery of the X0 to customers in the first half of 1974 ; this has to be verified by detailed planning.
Philips will investigate in co-operation with CII
and Siemens the following possible implementations of X0 :
a) K + IRIS (complete
X-mode)
b) K or IRIS (two modes)
c) K
If X0 does satisfy either a) or b), X0 will be considered as common product from
the beginning.
If X0 only satisfies c) X0 will be considered as common product of the X-line
only from the time of announcement of X-line products, in accordance with a
marketing policy, decided in common. Before this date, this computer will be
considered as a product compatible with the 4004 line, whatever its name, to be
decided jointly, will be.
The announcement of the X-line including X0 shall be a joint marketing strategy to be evaluated.
8. Philips will not develop a version of X0 at the level of X1 and CII will not develop a version of X1 at the level of X0.
9. Philips will start immediately on the development
of X0. Forecasts for quantities of X0 will be given by the three companies and
the study-company, immediately after detailing of specifications mentioned in
paragraph 3.
22 août : Subagreement of X-line.
COVERING UNDERSTANDING FOR SUBAGREEMENTS OF X - LINE
NDLR : ce document, daté du 22 août 1972, signé par Siemens à cette date
et par CII le 29 août 1972, est une introduction générale à la ligne X. Il
comprend ensuite le Subagreement pour X3 puis le Subagreement pour X4.
1) In the frame of the realization of a common product line, in accordance with
annex 2 of the Heads of Agreement, CII and Siemens agree to sign first
Subagreements covering X3 and X4.
Each of these products corresponds to a Subagreement enclosed hereto. These two Subagreements are linked together.
2) These Subagreements will be followed by Subagreements concerning X1, X2 and. X5.
3) For all the X-line products, CII and Siemens commit to announce commercially a product as a product of the common line only under conditions to be agreed upon jointly.
4) It is agreed upon to begin within the next two
months to study the conditions for a common convergence strategy regarding
software systems, which are competitive to the virtual memory operating systems
newly announced in the market and which solve the problem of input/output
interfaces and controllers.
SUBAGREEMENT FOR X3 BETWEEN CII AND SIEMENS
As a result of the discussions between CII and Siemens on :
- the functional specification of the processors of the common X-product line of electronic data processing equipment,
- the minimum requirements with regard to the characteristics of the X4-system,
- the times and preconditions of deliveries for X4-systems,
- the estimated requirements of Siemens of X4-systems,
the following agreement has been reached between CII
and Siemens :
1) Specification of the processors of the common X-product line :
CII and Siemens agree to establish a document which
shall describe the common functional characteristics of all processors of the
X-product line, hereinafter referred to as Specification of "Common
Functional Characteristics of X-line" (CFCX).
CFCX shall define the sets of functions on machine language level which are
common to all processors of the X-product line.
To reach CFCX in an appropriate time, the existing "Specification of the
Functional Characteristics of the NSF-K-Processors on the Machine Language Level,
Revision 1", issued May 2nd, 1972 shall be used.
CFCX shall constitute the functions of the
processors of the X-product line as listed below :
- To handle nonprivileged instructions of K in K-format.
- To handle nonprivileged instructions of IRIS 60 in IRIS-format in accordance
with the CII-document "IRIS Non Privileged Instruction Set", dated
March 30 th 1972.
- To handle privileged instructions of K plus a few identified additional
privileged instructions, both in K- and in IRIS-format.
- Program interrupt mechanism and privileged registers as defined for K,
extended by some identified additional registers such as program timers.
- Memory addressing including the address translation mechanism based on the
page size of 2048 Bytes (Being different to K).
- Input/output operations and programming as defined for K with associated
privileged instructions.
- Initial program load and machine error recovery as individually defined for
cash processor of the X-product line.
- The X-standard input/output-interface supported on all processors of the
X-product line will be the NSF-K standard input/output-interface.
Beside the X-features, additions or extensions to
individual processors of the X-product line may be provided for by mutual
agreement to enable a migration from existing systems to X-systems during a
transient period.
The availability of CFCX which shall describe the above mentioned sets of
functions on a bit level, shall be achieved as soon as possible being, however,
of no influence on the delivery dates according to paragraph 3.
2) Minimum requirements with regard to the characteristics of X3-system :
The X3-system to be developed by Siemens and to be delivered by Siemens to CII has to meet the functional specification of the processors of the common X-product line according to paragraph 1 above.
Siemens and CII will jointly study the conditions of technical and. economical feasibility of a CII input-/output-interface on X3. After receipt of the CII-input-/output-interface specification by Siemens, Siemens will within 4 weeks notify CII of the conditions under which Siemens will be able to realize the CII input-/output-interface to X 3 ; and Siemens will realize this upon request of CII under terms and conditions then mutually to be agreed upon.
The minimum requirements shall be :
- main storage capacity : 128 KB 2048 KB
- block multiplex channels : 4
transfer rate per channel : 1.66 x 106 B/s
2 Byte extension transfer rate : 3.33 x 106 B/s

CII in the framework of the estimations. CII will place the orders in due time.
5) The selling prices for X3-systems to be delivered
to CII by Siemens (units of preproduction as well as units of serial production)
shall not exceed 50 % of the prices effectively in force at customer level at
the time of the respective deliveries.
In case such prices should not exist at the time of CII's orders of X3-systems
then CII and Siemens will agree upon competitive market-prices for such
X3-systems and the prices charged to CII shall not exceed 50 % of said
competitive market prices.
6) Siemens and CII agree to conclude a corresponding Subagreement with regard to
X4-systems of the common X-product line to be developed by CII and to be
delivered by CII to Siemens.
All amendments or modifications to this Subagreement must be in writing to be
valid.
The above accords with the understanding of the parties as signed below.
SUBAGREEMENT FOR X4 BETWEEN CII AND SIEMENS
2) Minimum requirements with regard to the characteristics of X4-system :
The X4-system to be developed by CII and to be delivered by CII to Siemens has to meet the functional specification of the processors of the common X-product line according to paragraph 1 above.
The minimum requirements shall be :
- main storage capacity : 256 KB 4096 KB
- block multiplex channels : 10
transfer
rate per channel : 1.66 x 106 B/s
2
Byte extension transfer rate : 3.33 x 106 B/s
- Byte multiplex channels : 2
transfer
rate per channel : 400 KB/s
number
of addressable peripherals per channel : 256
- total System throughput : 10 x 106 B/s
- performance (*) : > 900 KOP/s
(*) measured by an instruction mix based on the composite mix to be agreed upon
in detail separately between CII and Siemens.
CII declares that the aforesaid minimum requirements most probably will be
exceeded in the realization of the X4-systems.
If necessary CII will provide the X-system with the possibility to add
additional features which handle the IRIS 80 instruction set and which support
the CII-Byte input/output-interface. CII will use its best efforts to minimize
the costs which arise in connection with the provision of the possibility to add
the aforesaid additional features with respect to such X4-systems which do not
require such additional features.
3) Times and preconditions of deliveries for X4-systems :
a) CII and Siemens are aware that the timing for
X4-systems deliveries is of crucial importance for Siemens' and CII's EDP
business.
The following dates for delivery of X4-systems by CII to Siemens are agreed upon
as the utmost agreeable by Siemens:
September 1974 : 1 prototype (to be operated at CII as long as Siemens and CII consider
this necessary)
February 1975 : 1 prototype
April 1975 : 1 prototype
September1975 : 1 preproduction system
November 1975 : 1 preproduction system
December 1975 : 2 preproduction systems
January 1976 two systems, February 1976 three systems and as
of March 1976 two systems per month in accordance with paragraph 4 below. In
case of impossibility to deliver two systems in December 1975 but only one
system, one more system will be delivered in January 1976.
CII guarantees that the aforementioned preproduction
system of X4-systems will be suitable for delivery to customers.
Furthermore CII declares that it will investigate the possibilities for and,
using its best efforts, try to achieve an earlier delivery of the second
prototype.
b) CII and Siemens agree that CII's compliance with
the delivery dates pursuant to lit. a) above will be subject to Siemens'
fulfillment of the following preconditions :
- Indication of the
configurations wanted in due time in advance.
- Delivery to CII of
peripherals to be attached in due time in advance.
- Assistance by 5
Siemens engineers in CII's development of the X4-system starting at the latest
at the end of 1972.
- PBS together with
appropriate programs for testing the X4-system, to be placed by Siemens at CII's
disposal in due time in advance.
- Assistance by 5
Siemens test engineers starting as of March 1974.
4) Estimated requirements of Siemens of X4-systems :
Siemens estimates its requirements of X4-systems as
follows :
1974 / 75 : 7 X4-systems including prototypes
1976 : 20 X4-systems
1977
: 20 X4-sytems
1978
: 25 X4-systems
1979
: 15 X4-systems
CII is prepared to meet the actual orders from Siemens, in the framework of
these above estimations. Siemens will place the orders in due time.
5) The selling prices for X4-systems to be delivered
to Siemens by CII (units of preproduction as well as units of serial production)
shall not exceed 50 % of the prices effectively in force at customer level at
the time of the respective deliveries.
In case such prices should not exist at the time of Siemens' orders of
X4-systems then CII and Siemens will agree upon competitive market prices for
such X4-systems and the prices charged to Siemens shall not exceed 30 % of said
competitive market prices.
The prices of the three prototypes defined as per
paragraph 5 will be agreed upon later.
6) Siemens and CII agree to conclude a corresponding
Subagreement with regard to X3-systems of the common X-product line to be
developed by Siemens and to be delivered by Siemens to CII.
All amendments or modifications to this Subagreement must be in writing to be valid.
The above accords with the understanding of the parties as signed below
